Pulling off the startline, Beaubier immediately began to move up and by the end of the first lap he was already in 14^th. Putting his head down, he continued to gain spots and by lap 20 he was running in 12^th.

Due to concerns about tire wear, the AMA threw a red flag at the end of lap 20 for a mandatory front tire change. After more consideration and talks with Dunlop, they further decided in the interests of safety, that all riders would need to be fitted with entirely new-spec backup fronts which were stored in Dunlop's garages. Outfitting the entire field and warming the tires was a long process and resulted in a two-hour delay.

In addition, keeping both the competitors’ safety and the tires' capabilities in mind, AMA Pro officials decided to shorten the rest of the race to a final 15-lap sprint race.

When the flag signaled the restart, Beaubier was again ready to go. Starting off in 12^th place, he once again began to move up and by the end of the 15 laps he was in 8^th place overall.
